Description
The original targa 911s were either loved for their compromise between open-top motoring and tin-top rigidity or loathed for the fact that they compromised the iconic lines of the 911 coupe.
Porsche rode the criticism for over 25 years before they created the 993 targa, a car that at once overcame concerns with the earlier cars and became another Porsche icon.
The 993 targa's glass roof replaced the folding hardtop of the 964 and earlier cars and instead of a somewhat awkward system of unbolting the roof, folding it and storing it in the luggage compartment the new roof slid back behind the rear window electrically at the touch of a button. This ensured the lines of the car were unspoiled and luggage space uncompromised. To save the cabin from heating up an electric blind slides back to screen the cabin from the sun. Genuinely the best of both worlds.
Only around 3000 were built outside the US, therefore also making it a rare sight.
Polar Silver is one of our favourite shades for a 993. It shows a slight blueish pearlescence in the flesh and it really suits the delicate shape of the '3. This car also avoids the usual trap of a light grey interior, the metropole blue contrasting nicely with the coachwork.
The car has covered 76,000 miles from new with a comprehensive service history, all at main agents and specialists it comes with a folder of receipts and all keys, including the critical red master.
Thankfully targas were fitted as standard with air conditioning. Cruise control was fitted as a factory option and rear parking sensors and HID lights are nicely integrated upgrades.
Targas are great fun and this is a really well cared for little car that would look equally wonderful parked outside a country pile or zipping round town on a summer's evening.
We last supplied the car in 2010 to a long term customer and collector who is also something of a perfectionist. It really wasn't a bad car when he bought it, but that didn't stop him sending it to one of the country's finest coachworks (winners of this year's Rolls Royce and Bentley Concours) for a complete respray and detail. The paintwork is now utterly unmarked. A change of country of residence now means he no longer has a need for the car.
