You can be fussy . Do not assume that a Porsche is fine simply because its better than the average used car of that age. Most used Porsche will look nice, be careful to find one that is genuinely in the right condition for you.

Depreciation. Most good things cost us money, but a 911 traditionally has a mild depreciation curve. In fact some models, such as the eighties 3.2 Carrera, 964 RS, 993 RS seem to stay more or less stationary. When all is said and done, if you really enjoy your 911, any depreciation will be forgotten.

Porsche Specifiaction from 1989 to date

964 - 1988 to 1989 : 1989 Model Year - Wheelbase (mm): 2271 Length/Width (mm): 4250/1651


Significant developments: Launched in January 1989 with new engine, suspension, brakes and numerous body parts, Porsche claimed the 964 shared only 13% of its parts with its predecessors. Carrera 4 split torque 31/69 front to rear. All wheel ABS and power steering standard, catalyst introduced.

964 - 1989 to 1990 : 1990 Model Year - Significant developments: All pre-964 models now deleted. Carrera 2 introduced, Targa and Cabrio available for both C2 and C4 models. Tiptronic available on C2. Cabrio and Targa add 50kg.

964 - 1990 to 1991 : 1991 Model Year - Significant developments: Rear drive, 320bhp 964 Turbo introduced.

 

964 - 1991 to 1992 : 1992 Model Year - Significant developments: Stripped out Carrera 2 RS introduced. 381bhp Turbo S model available to order (80 built)

964 - 1992 to 1993 : 1993 Model Year - Significant developments: Speedster introduced. 3.6 Turbo production begins in Jan 1993.

 

 

 

The Porsche Type 993 , or simply 993 ( nine-nine-three), was the version of Porsche 's 911 model produced from late 1993 through early 1998 , replacing the 964 . Its discontinuation marked the end of air-cooled Porsches, giving it a special place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts.

As before, Porsche made several variants of the 911 to satisfy every driver. The Carrera was reliable, safe and fast, and was the sports car you could use every day; the Carrera Cabriolet and Targa were ideal for sporty cruising; the 180mph Turbo and Turbo S were supremely quick; and the uncompromising Carrera RS and GT2 were race-oriented.

 

993 - 1993 to 1994 : 1994 Model Year - Wheelbase (mm): 2272 Length/Width (mm): 4245/1735 (Carrera 4S and Turbo 1795mm) Significant developments: 993 production begins in Jan 1994. Internal engine upgrades increase power. Multi-link rear suspension across the range. 4-pot brakes standard front and rear.


993 - 1994 to 1995: 1995 Model Year - Significant developments: Carrera RS introduced. Redesigned all-wheel drive system on C4. Tiptronic S first appears. Four-wheel drive Turbo with twin turbochargers and 6-speed gearbox introduced.

993 - 1995 to 1996: 1996 Model Year - Significant developments: VarioCam engines give more power. Sliding glass-roofed Targa introduced.

993 - 1996 to 1997: 1997 Model Year - Significant developments: 430bhp Turbo S offered as ultimate 993 run-out limited edition model.

993 - 1997 to 1998: 1998 Model Year - Significant developments: Producton of all-wheel drive and Turbo continues until July 1998.

 

 

 

The Porsche Type 996 is a sports car , and the version of the Porsche's " 911 " Carrera model sold from 1998 (as a 1999 model) through to 2004 . It has since been replaced by the Type 997 , although certain versions are being kept in production while replacements are finalized. At its debut, it featured the most significant changes to the Carrera model since its introduction in 1963 . Chief among these is the fully water-cooled engine, replacing the previously air-cooled engines used exclusively by the Carrera models. More stringent noise regulations and higher customer expectations for both refinement and performance made the switch necessary. Other significant changes include a sleeker body with a more steeply raked windshield and a re-designed interior. With these differences in mind, many "purists" consider the 996 to be an altogether different car, at least in spirit, than the Carreras that preceded it, as opposed to being a development of the original.

996 - 1997 to 1998: 1998 Model Year - Wheelbase (mm): 2350 Length/Width (mm): 4430 (Turbo & GT2 4435) /1765 (Turbo & GT2 1830)
Significant developments: Variocam/Varioram engines water-cooled for first time. 6-speed manual transmission fitted across range, five-speed for Tiptronic. Carrera 4 introduces PSM.
996 - 1998 to 1999 : 1999 Model Year - stripped out, 360bhp GT3 launched.
996 - 1999 to 2000: 2000 Model Year - twin-turbo, 414bhp four-wheel drive turbo model introduced with VarioCam Plus.

996 - 2000 to 2001: 2001 Model Year - GT2 introduced, the most powerful Porsche to date with 462bhp, rear wheel drive, ceramic disc brakes and no PSM ! Breaks lap record for road legal cars at the Nürburgring's infamous Nordschleife.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

New 996 - 2001 to 2002 : 2002 Model Year
Significant developments: second generation 996. Engine capacity grows to 3.6 litres, power increase to 316bp. Turbo's trip computer standard across the range as are Turbo headlight. Cup holders fitted for first time. Carrera 4S and Targa models introduced. Track for 18" wheels 1465mm/1480mm.

996 2003 to 2004 : 2003 Model Year
Significant developments: The GT3 returns with 381 bhp while the GT3 RS weighs in 20 kilos lighter. Both the Turbo and Carrera4S receive the Cabriolet treatment and the GT2 gets a power hike and some carbon fibre trim.

 

 

 

 

997: 2004 - TO DATE
Two -door, two Coupe. Rear-mounted 3.6- and 3.8-litre six-cylinder, water-cooled 'boxer' engine. More evolution than revolution, the second generation of water-cooled 911 has a hint of retro 993 look about it and is initially available with two engine options. 997 ownership begins with the 321 bhp 3.6-litre Carrera, although the majority of customers will be opting for the more powerful 355 bhp Carrera S. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) allows Carrera S to play as continental GT cuiser one minute and Nordschleife slayer the next. Interior quality improved over 996, and the cup holders are quite possibly the most over-engineered examples ever found in a car.
997 - 2004: 2005 Model Year - Wheelbase (mm): 2350; Length / Width (mm): 4427/1808; Track (mm): 18" wheels - 1486(f), 1529 (r); 19" wheels - 1486 (f), 1511 (r); Height (mm, Carrera/CarreraS): 1310/1300.
Significant developments: 3.6-litre 321 bhp and 3.8-litre 355 bhp water-cooled flat-six engines for Carrera and Carrera S respectively. New six-speed manual gearbox standard on both models, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) standard on Carrera S, cost-option on Carrera. 19" alloy wheels standard fitment for Carrera S. 997 sold alongside Turbo-bodied and GT996 models initially at launch.
