After the discontinuation of the 356 model in 1965 , Porsche was left with the pricey new 911 as their only offering. Fearing that its considerable price increase over the 356 would cost the company sales and narrow appeal to the brand, a decision was made by executives to introduce a new entry-level model. Built on the 911's chassis and sharing its bodyshell, Porsche was able to offer the 912 for much less than an entry level 911 by using the four-cylinder engine from the 356 rather than the 911's "flat" six-cylinder powerplant and by reducing the number of standard features. The proven reliability of the 356's powerplant combined with the 911 bodywork and low price made the 912 a very attractive buy to both new and old customers, and it substantially outsold the 911 during the first few years of production; Porsche produced slightly more than 30,000 units during it's five year production run.

Porsche 914
2 door coupe with mid mounted four and six cylinder air cooled boxer engine. Built by Karmann, the original entry level Porsche was praised by the press for its unrivalled dynamics. Engines were VW sourced units and although later six cylinder units offered significant performance advantages, sales were very poor and the 914 model lasted less than two years. 914 - Wheelbase (mm): 2459 - Length/Width (mm): 4050/1650
Significant developments: 1.7 litre VW 4-cylinder and de-tuned 911T 2.0 litre 6-cylinder engines offered, MacPherson front and rear trailing link suspension, disc brakes all round, 5-speed gearbox and low spec interior 1972 - 914-6 dropped due to poor sales. |
Porsche 912 & 914
Porsche 912. 2 door coupe, rear engined four cylinder air cooled boxer engine. The poor man's Porsche was actually quite a bargain and has a cult following today. Sharing the same body as the 911, the significant differences were the four cylinder engines used in both models and the lower spec. The 912 was developed ona yearly basis and these closely followed those of the 911. Initial production run lasted four years and resulted in over 30,000 sales, and was re-introduced in 1975 to span the 914/924 gap. A further 2,000 models were produced in this time.

By the late 1960s, both Volkswagen and Porsche were in need of new models; Porsche was looking for a model to replace the 912 and Volkswagen was looking to add a sporty, inexpensive 2-door to the lineup. As a cost saving measure, and in part because Volkswagen wanted engineering help from Porsche, the two decided to share a platform, originally intending to sell the vehicle in four-cylinder trim as a Volkswagen and in six-cylinder trim as a Porsche
