We've previously been involved with the Chesil company under its original ownership and have sold this Speedster before. At the time felt it to be the nicest one we'd driven, so much so that when Chesil changed hands we suggested to the new owners that the driving style of this car ought to be their benchmark.
The time it's been away from us hasn't spoiled this; it's still a brilliant little car with a lovely patina to it.
The original build was completed in 2001 and the car has been in good, regular use since covering a total of 16,000 miles.
It is based on an independent-rear-suspension donor and retains the 1970 registration date so is happily road tax exempt. The original J-suffix plate has been replaced with a more period correct three-letter, three-number registration.
The car was nicely optioned from new including :
- Audi TT silver paint with black hood
- High back black seats with height and lumbar adjustment
- Flint grey carpets
- Cream faced gauges
- Wind-up windows
- High ratio gearbox
- Engine immobiliser
- Luggage rack
- Porsche badging
It was supplied with an 1800cc air cooled flat-four engine breathing through twin downdraft carbs and a stainless steel twin pipe exhaust system. This engine really suits the car, giving it a very period sound and enough power to be comfortable and easy to drive in modern traffic and to feel spirited and urgent on the open road.
A short-shift Gene Berg lever changes gears far more positively and accurately than drivers of an original car might believe and the long ratio box gives the car a relaxed cruising gait at motorway and A-road speeds.
Modern convenience is attended to with a high-spec audio system and under-dash cigar lighter.
This really is a very nice example and its relaxing, easy going personality make it one we'd be more than happy to drive every day.
