Porsche 911 2.7 S - Deposit taken - £39,995
This pretty little 1973 S is the real definition of a sleeper. Sat at the lights or in the pit garage it is merely a very beautiful early 911 but once rolling it turns into an absolute hooligan's hot rod.
An original RHD 2.4 S, the car was rebuilt for competition use using the best correct components and was campaigned for a short time before more recently being cosmetically overhauled and converted back to a road car.
The 1973 engine is broadly 2.7 RS spec, though subjectively it feels rather quicker than most genuine 2.7s we've driven. It zings seemingly without inertia round to 7000rpm and beyond, accompanied by the hollow mechanical bark that only a mechanical injection 2.7 can make. Snick the 5 speed 915 box quickly and positively into second, bury the right pedal and you feel the nose lighten, the engine take a deep breath and the car surge forward, a blaring mass of air cooled chatter.
The engine was built in 2006 by Jaz of Wembley. The total bill, including a few cosmetic tweaks was over £15,000. A dyno print from March 2010 following set up work by Autofarm shows a strong 213bhp.
The pace that can be achieved cross country is astonishing for a car of this age.
It's a real pleasure to drive in itself, but what makes it more special is the added enjoyment in the knowledge that whatever car it just left in its wake will be puzzling at just how a classic Porsche wearing a 2.4 badge can go quite so well.
Clearly this car will not suit someone looking for originality, a matching number 2.4S would cost considerably more, but to throw it at a road is to understand in an instant why a classic, 2.7 lightweight air cooled 911 is such an iconic machine. Whether you want a road rocket, classic rally machine or a beautiful historic circuit car this S is mechanically and cosmetically all you could want. We adore it.
