Introduced in 1994, the Porsche 911, Type 993, was the last of the air-cooled 911 line and as such will always hold a special place in the heart and minds of Porsche 911 fans. What followed (the Porsche 996) was very much a revolution.

The 993, by contrast, was more evolution, but even so it was quite a significant one, over the 964 model 911, which it replaced. For the first time the basic shape of the 911 was changed, the front end, wider and flatter, mirroring the 928 and 968 (albeit without the pop-up headlamps) for a more ‘family’ look. The rear end took on a wider stance, with a bulging rear arches, even on the narrow-bodied Carrera 2. The basic 911 silhouette was still unmistakeable, but with modern twist.

Mechanically the 993 retained the 3.6-litre engine, but with detail changes, that raised power to 272bhp and then 285bhp, with the arrival of the Varioram induction system.

A new six-speed gearbox offered a greater range of ratios, while the 4-speed Tiptronic remained a popular option. An all new multi-link rear suspension set-up offered greater control of the rear-engined mass. The front suspension remained much as the 964.

Beyond the base Carrera 2, model variations included widebody, Turbo, GT, Targa and more pertinently here, the Cabriolet.

Which brings us neatly to this 1997 993 Carrera 2 Cabriolet, a car that we know well here at Paul Stephens, which makes the task of finding it a new home, even more of a pleasure.

First registered in August 1998, by H.R. Owen, this is one of the very last 993s. Finished in stunning Arena Red and features Cashmere Beige and black interior.

Being a late model, it of course has 285bhp Varioram engine, with power transmitted by 4-speed, switchable Tiptronic S transmission. Options include air-conditioning, graduated tint windscreen and on-board computer. Additionally, 18inch Technology wheels have been fitted by a previous enthusiast owner. Also fitted is a Porsche Classic head unit, which perfectly suits the style of the 993 interior.

With just 53,600-miles on the odometer, condition is, as you expect, good, bordering on exceptional, with immaculate paint and a recently replaced hood that, with care, will last for many years to come. In operation the hood opens, retracts and closes, perfectly.

Servicing has been carried out exclusively by Porsche Centres and well known specialists, and in recent years here at Paul Stephens. Typically of a 993 with this sort of mileage, maintenance has been largely routine servicing, with no major issues to report and certainly no major expenditure on the horizon. A Porsche 993 Cabrio that is ready to be enjoyed.

Well, it’s no 993 Turbo or GT2, but then isn’t that the genius of the 911? There is a model for everyone and for those that consider that the very definition of a sports car (and it’s hard to argue with), is one that is open to the skies, then the 911 Cabriolet is that car.

Jump in, marvel as the roof does its thing, select Tiptronic drive and just enjoy the pleasure that open top motoring gives, enhanced by the unique 911 experience.

And for a more spirited 911 experience? Then get interactive with the Tiptronic’s steering wheel-mounted controls and take over shifting duties and work the 285bhp flat-six as hard as you like. And with the roof down, you get to hear it in all its air-cooled glory, too. What’s not to like?

Not everyone wants the hardcore, hair shirt 911 experience, which is exactly why the 911 Cabriolet exists. Drive it and you’ll get it.
